su_audio PLAY button stopped working in Safari 14

    Last week, the su_audio player stopped playing audio in Safari 14. The player displays, but the PLAY button does not activate when pressed.

    Other observations:

    I’m testing with Safari Version 14.0 (15610.1.28.1.9, 15610) on a MacbookPro.

    Audio still plays like normal in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera.

    Visitors to our site are contacting us to report the same issue. We’ve been using Shortcodes Ultimate su_audio player on hundreds of web pages for about 5 years.

    Here’s an example of our implementation from one of our pages.

    [su_audio url=”https://bbnradio-a.akamaihd.net/BBNOnDemand/english/cE2GTJ.m4a” autoplay=”yes”]

    I tried it with other audio URL’s and also with autoplay=”no”. No change to either variation.

    We love the player and hope we can contribute to this fix. Thank you for making such a great plugin!

    Hi mdghion,

    Reluctantly, we switched all our players over to the HTML5 default audio player. The short code is very similar. Here’s the syntax.

    [audio src="https://domain.com/audiofile.m4a" autoplay="yes"]

    There’s a list of additional attributes here: https://html.com/attributes/audio-src/

    In our case, we had over a thousand pages to update. I used a free plugin called ‘Better Search Replace’. With that plugin, I was able to update all our pages in a couple minutes.

    This works well in Safari 14. So far, none of our thousands of daily visitors have complained.

    The “Better Search Replace” works great.

    It would be better if Shortcods Ultimate had a functional audio shortcode but that will work for now.
