Style ajax loader. Checkout hook?

On my checkout page, the loader is high on the document resulting in a blank overlay while the ajax call is processing. In other words – no user feedback that the page is actually doing something.
Is there a hook or a way I can make the the ajax call die so I can adjust the overlay/loader?
