• When I try to update to any 7.x version it causes a critical error that takes down my website. I’m stuck on version 6.3.2

For reference I am on: WP 5.4.2

I use WPEngine as my server provider

Would you be able to extract this error for me? You may be using some old customization or something, version 7 was breaking the compatibility which can cause fatal errors if not prepared to be updated.

Sure thing, how would I go about extracting the error for you? Do you have a guide to point me towards?

Are you suggesting I might have to upgrade the content of my notifications before I upgrade the app itself?

You’d need to either look up for the error log in the hosting administration panel or enable WP_DEBUG to see the error directly on the website.

You’d need to update not the content but any customization done in the code. I’m not sure if we haven’t done any custom plugin for you or maybe you are using some old paid add-on?
