Stuck on "Downloading install package" when installing plug-in

  • When I am trying to install plugins then I get the message
    “Downloading install package” with the plugin-name.

    After that nothing!
    Where is the folder where these plugin zip-files get stored before extraction. I have the feeling it has to do with the user-rights on this folder. Why don’t I see an error-message of some sort? I have been trying for 4 hours now and I am getting extremely frustrated with WordPress altogether for not having decent debug-info, even when I have turned on debug in wp-config.php.
