• Hello all,

I have successfully installed WordPress 3.0.1 and enabled network. I was even successful in adding users and sites as subdomains. Big deal huh? Not so much you say ??
Well let’s just say that I had to overcome few obstacles, and there are still many I am struggling with.

I have done a good deal of research trying to learn on my own, I am now to the point where I am not sure if WordPress Multisite is the right solution for me.

I would like to start a community website based on invitation, invited users will be able to join an existing group “town” or create one in the event that a group does not exist yet for their city/town.

The purpose of the website will be to share “stuff” with members of the local community. Think of it like kids giving away their extra baseball card. Registered users will be able to view the “cards” that are being offered as well as offer their own cards to other user within their group.

I tested some community themes but couldn’t get them to work (missing “bp-default” parent theme), I tested some plugins for adding invitation as well as classifieds and twitter like status update.

I have reached an overload and all the searches I am trying lead me to the same articles or forums I already read. Yep, I hit a brick wall and I am cornered real good.

Please provide some direction. Any idea you you might suggest to achieve my goal for this website would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Sorry for the long post.

this looks like you installed a BuddyPress child theme and you;re not running Buddypress. ??

Are the groups BuddyPress groups or blogs?

Honestly, what it looks like you want to do may be netter served with just Buddypress, which does not require setting up a network.

Yeah, I figured that much. I tried installing Buddypress default theme but I ended up giving up on that.

Right now I have them setup as blogs, I don’t have any objection to setting them up as Buddypress groups if that helps me achieve my goals.

I have tried Buddypress a while back but didn’t go very far with it, the fact that the project is not being developed anymore kind of steered me away. One thing to keep in mind (don’t know how relevant this is) is that I would like the landing page for each blog/group to be the list of available items that other users are sharing. I haven’t figured out yet if this will be a classifieds plugin or a status update type of theme.

Buddypress is very well still under ACTIVE development. You may be confusing it with bbPress, which is changing.

Huh, I must have confused my self somewhere along my research. Well, to installing Buddypress I go!
Thank you for your input Andrea. If you can’t think of anything (theme, plugin, etc…) that will fit my project please do share.

    This part?

    Is gonna be custom work.

I was thinking of using some classifieds plugin for that. I will need to fiddle around with some of the plugins out there and see if I can get the results I am seeking.
