    Hi,
    I am working with SEMrush to maintain my websites, and after the latest Yoast update, I started getting this error:
    structured data items are invalid
    A value for the item.name or name field is required for a nested ListItem.

    When I test the URL on Google’s rich snippet tool I don’t get any error message.

    Also, I have tried disabling the breadcrumbs but when I test the URL with Google’s rich snippet tool, I still see the breadcrumbs.
    Thanks

  • A bit of a backtrack for my part:-

    My contact at Google has confirmed the Rich Results Test tool hasn’t been updated since July 2020, so any recent algorithm changes regarding markups won’t be reflected yet in the tool.

    Google is now penalising unnamed structured data items, the issue is their tool and the API used by companies like Yoast SEO and Screaming Frog haven’t been updated to reflect an already-live penalisation factor.

    So don’t expect Semrush to roll this back. As I was told quite firmly, just because they are partnered with Yoast SEO doesn’t mean they are going to compromise their own reporting quality.

    Found the same issue last 1 week back. Our site score was drop down to 75% because of the same error. any idea, when they will fix the issue?

    @christina987

    Read my update above. It’s not an issue in Semrush.

    @theinvisiblehan So are you saying it is a problem on Yoast SEO?
    @mikes41720 Do you have any updates on the matter?

    as well from my side on maskenplanet.de I use the yoast breadcrumb and receive an Semrush error “A value for the item.name or name field is required for a nested ListItem.”
    @theinvisiblehan is it now a false positive or a real error?
    I see yoast breadcrumb does not add structural data so far:
    https://schema.org/BreadcrumbList
    https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/breadcrumb#html

    So it seems it is a real error and yoast has not implemented the structural data yet? Any elaboration would be really helpful. I reach out yoast premium support as well.

    Cheers,
    Marc

    same problem for me also many hundreds of errors is anyone going to fix this?

    same here too. semrush is popping up “structured data items are invalid” errors for clients’ site. this is rather annoying. please fix this soon. thank you.

    My source at SEMrush sent me this message:
    It is a complex issue addressed with the highest priority, so the developers are still working on it. We can expect that its resolution can take around two or three weeks. So, as soon as the event of new data is emerging regarding this widget, I will inform you.

    same problem.
    hope they gone fix it.

    Is this about an error with Yoast SEO or with SEMRush report ?
    The breadcrumbs errors are reported in the SEMRush report but not on the Rich Results Test https://search.google.com/test/rich-results….

    @yoast @semrush any new updates on this?

    I am quite positive this is not a false negative but actually a real error. Google Search Console is now giving me the exact same error (A value for the item.name or name field is required for a nested ListItem.) –> “Either “name” or “item.name” should be specified”.

    Yoast address this ASAP please. Keep us updated. Thanks!

    @izaakbeer Hi. You are receiving the “name or item.name” breadcrumbs error from Google Search Console and SEMRush report ?

    The pages with the breadcrumbs error are ok on the: https://search.google.com/test/rich-results ?

    Thank you.
    Best regards.
    Peter

    Hi all, we recently published this post regarding the schema breadcrumb “name” warnings that a lot of you are seeing: https://yoast.com/help/breadcrumb-changes-yoast-seo-16-2/ . That should help you determine if you’re running into an actual bug, or a tool that is not able to parse schema data correctly.

    @djennez

    third-party SEO tools mistakenly showing warnings

    1. Semrush isn’t just a third-party SEO tool, it is one of your biggest commercial partners, and your plugin (both the free and paid versions) use Semrush and vice versa.

    2. They haven’t mistakenly shown anything. As was already explained before, they rolled out new Schema rules on Semrush ahead of Google updating its APIs, which have now started to roll out. Today I have received the same warning Semrush gave weeks ago within Google Search Console.

    3. It is concerning that despite being partners with Semrush, instead of working with them and having their insights and inside contacts at Google helping your plugin be a better product, you have instead tried to throw them under the bus.

    Do better in future. The time wasted on this explainer and covering your tracks could have been used to actually just apply “duplicate” nameitems, even if “it doesn’t make sense for us to describe the page you’re on twice” as you claim.

    Guess what? You don’t make the call if it makes sense or not. If you need to describe the page twice, describe the page twice.

    Sorry if I come across blunt, but I find this thread deeply unprofessional of Yoast SEO.

    @yoavshai

    To get back to your opening post, Semrush were 100% correct with their warnings, weeks ahead of Google Search Console and Rich Results Tool starting to warn about ‘name’ and/or ‘item.name’ errors.
