"Strip the category base" breaking reeatedly

  • Hi guys,
    and thanks for a great plugin.
    I am having issues with the Permalinks setting to get rid of /category/ in archive view urls.

    WordPress version:
    3.4.2

    WordPress SEO version:
    1.2.5 (I did update to 1.2.8 today after reactivating the setting)

    I did this:
    In Permalinks, select “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.”

    I expected the plugin to do this:
    Strip the category base from the category URL

    Instead it did this:
    The plugin worked at first, but then it breaks unexpectedly so the category views move back to the original url and the shorter links give a 404 error. This happened three months ago, then TWICE today.
    When I login the checkbox is still selected, but I have to unselect it + save + select it + save to get it to work again.

    Notes:
    I would try disabling some other plugins but I don’t know how to replicate the problem. Ever heard of this before?
