string(4) “left” appearing under grid

I’m seeing strange text output which looks like a var_dump type string since a recent update to post grid combo.

I’ve tracked it down to the “excerpt read more” styles, by putting some custom code into the template:

But then I can’t find any further with it, and searching for var_dump doesn’t help me find it so I’m a bit stuck.

I can’t find where the hook is run, it must be put together dynamically somewhere?
