Strikeout of play button on WordPress video block.

  • Hi all, I attached a video block on my wordpress site. I added a video through the media library and attached it to the block. I only enabled video playback control on the setting.

    On my Chrome or Firefox browser, when you visit my site, and you can press the video play button and the video will play. Although not related to mobile, the video feature works as expected on my laptop using these browsers. It will work in Safari. I can live with this because I can tell people to use Chrome or Firefox.

    What I can’t live with however, is that my iphone and several others’ iphones doesn’t show the video. Instead it shows a strikeout over the play button which mean you can’t play the video! I tried four browsers Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Duckduck with no affect on the video.

    How can I get the video to play on my iphone?

    More testing shows that people with Android phone can view the video. So it appears to be an iphone thing.

    The WordPress video block uses the basic HTML5 <video> element to embed videos.

    For best cross-browser compatibility, convert your video to MP4, instead of the current MOV(video/quicktime).

    Thank George, for the suggestion. I tried the following with no success:

    • I used handbrake to converted my mov files to mp4, AVI, Web-Optimized mp4 and none of these worked.
    • I used ffmpeg to convert to mp4 and that didn’t work either because the file was too large and the -crf options were not recognized on my terminal.

    To make it work, I posted the video to my youtube account unlisted and then used the youtube wordpress block to link it. That worked! All browsers and phones I tested work as expected.

    It ironic that I created the video on my Apple computer, yet the video would only play on Firefox and Chrome and not play on an iphone or Safari. I’m throwing away the Apple phrase, “it just works.”
