Hello — this is my first post.

I started a small web site design business last fall. I have built many web sites using CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. I know the basics of PHP. I use Dreamweaver extensively.

That said, I want to quickly learn to use WordPress effectively. I’m not that interested in blogging. I am more interested in CMS.

To get me started I bought WordPress for Dummies by Sabin-Wilson and Beginning WordPress 3 by Leary. These books are OK but didn’t excite me. I find that I learn web design best when a book takes me step by step through an example. I love Dan Cederholm’s books. They have the learner follow an example as the book progresses. Dave Power’s books use that learning technique also.

Is there a well written WordPress book that uses that learning technique? I would love to find a book that uses a non-WordPress static site as a starter and then takes the reader step by step through the process of converting the static site to a WordPress site.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • I don’t know of a book that does this (hopefully someone else does), but Lynda.com has an online course that might do what you’re looking for:

WordPress 3: Creating and Editing Custom Themes

There are even some free exercise files you could download first and take a look at.

Coincidentally, the course is by Chris Coyier, whose e-book Digging Into WordPress I was about to recommend as a fantastic resource for web designers wanting to learn WordPress. It doesn’t follow the methodology you’re looking for, but it’s easy to read and chock full of practical info geared to people like you so you might want to take a look.

IMO, if you’re already somewhat tech savvy, I suggest you just jump in and start using WP. You’ll find that it’s pretty intuitive and with your technical skills, you should be able to fine tune it to your needs without reading books.

Thank you, Kathryn and Gabe, for the good advice. I plan to buy Digging into WordPress but it is currently out of stock.
