I use WordPress 4.0.1 running Twenty Twelve theme and WP Statistics Version 8.4. A few weeks ago something strange happened. The number of visits rised steeply during a few days and peaked at more than 67.000 visits instead of the usual 450, But still the statistic tool counted the usual amount of visitors.

Today suddenly the visitors have gone up, from the usual 250 to more than 800. The visits they generate are more than 2800 which also is rather much. They come from all over the world, normaly my visitors come from Sweden as it is a swedish site.

The strangest thing though is that I cant se any rise of visits to any particular pages. All theese people are just passing invisibly through my pages. Can anyone explain this to me?

  • Take a look at your server’s log files. They will show you the detail to figure out what’s going on. It might be hackers trying brute force attacks, DOS attempts, or search engines robots misbehaving.

If they’re hitting resources that aren’t counted in the WP Statistics tool, that would account for the difference.

    Thank you Matt

I am not so good at the inside of computing. I will take your advice and write a mail to the people that supply my web connection. I will let you know what they say.

Once you take the conversation off the forums I might as well close the thread. If you can’t share things publicly then you’re in the wrong place to ask for help/ provide support.

I wrote to my internet supplier but they answered rather rudely:
“We do not provide support for installed software on VPS, but we can investigate and fix on 850 SEK/hour rate.”
That is about 100 USD per hour. I answered that I would not pay and that their calm attitude assured me that no imediate threat was at hand.
I really can′t see anything dangerous happen. My site https://www.fritext.se contains a somewhat highbrow left wing cultural blogg, swedish poetry, pics and music. Who would hijack that?

But just now I got an mail from the WP forum:

    “Andrew wrote:

Ooops, what did I do wrong?

Sorry I was under the impression that the conversation was about to go private between you and Matt Knowles via Email.
