Strange problem with the_excerpt

    After modifying my theme’s index.php to show the_excerpts rather than the_contents, I tested it in Firefox and it appeared to perform as expected, but when viewed in IE (6,7, &8), Chrome, and Opera the latest excerpt is displayed, then the content of the latest post, then the excerpts for the next 9 posts (display is set to 10).
