Strange problem with Action Scheduler / Huge growth of log file and Database

    Hi,

    I hope someone has some interesting (at least) proposition, since I am going pretty insane, and with no ideas where to look anymore, and how to solve this (now my most hated 2 words are Scheduled Action or Action Scheduler)…

    For a month now, dealing with unkown error, I did update WooCommerce to latest version and after publishing new product, the site has crashed… I did restore my DB and full website to earlier working state, but the problem persist on it… fixed some DB issues and missing tables about action schedules (4 tables). The website is running (let say), but there is strange problem which I can’t figure out… in the DB table wp_actionscheduler_logs there is multiple errors every second of not succeeding WP Cron actions that have been failed, and there are millions of them, as well on the hosting side, home/domain/logs folder there is domain_com.php.error.log which is growing parallel… talking about gigabytes of date every day in DB and log folder.

    I was increasing PHP limits, but it doesn’t matter how large allowance I put in .htaccess or php.ini or wp-config file, trying to access Action Schedules, it gives an error of exceeding allowed memory.

    That’s definitely more actions than we’d expect to see. You mentioned errors regarding WP Cron. Can you post an example of those errors too?

    Hey @redfevers,

    Thanks for sending those over. If you go to Tools > Site Health are you seeing any warnings about possible issues?

    If not, please install the WP Crontrol plugin. It’ll add a new section to the Tools menu called “Cron events.” Once that’s available, go there and see if there are any cron tasks that are late to run. Also, if there are any errors detected with WP Cron, they should be listed at the top of the screen.

    Let us know what you find out.

    In Site Health there is no issues, all good here.

    On the one hand, that’s good but on the other, it doesn’t get us closer to an answer.

    If this was my site, here’s what I would do.

    1. Set up a staging site to test with so nothing happens to the live site.
    2. Delete the pending scheduled actions.
    3. Deactivate WooCommerce.
    4. Activate WooCommerce again.

    If that still causes problems, I would do the same thing again, except before activating WooCommerce, I would install the standalone Action Scheduler plugin and see what happens when it’s active without WooCommerce.

    Let us know how it goes if you try this.

    I was already making earlier 2., 3. and 4. with no changes… I didn’t check Action Scheduler without WooCommerce, will give it a try…

    Hi Margaret,

    Sorry for late reply due to holidays. I just tried all the above, when the WooCommerce is deactivated (with all plugins deactivated as well when others are activated), there is no DB and logs entries, the problem is solved. As soon as I activate WooCommerce, the DB and logs are starting to grow…

    EDIT:
    While WooCommerce is active, the database action_scheduler_log is growing enourmus, and W3 Total Cache was the reason for host/logs error file (deactivated and it stops growth, only 5 lines of some errors)

    Hi @redfevers,

    Good to know you found the cause that generated numerous error logs. As for the last errors you shared it sounds like a MariaDB issue.

    Please be sure to run a WooCommerce core and WC database update to version 6.0.0 if you haven’t done it yet.

    Hi @rainfallnixfig ,

    I already made update to WC 6.0.0. and updated WC DB to latest. The problem persists still… Since last night, the DB wp_actionscheduler_logs is already 1.3GB and 12 millions rows and counting…

    Hi @redfevers,

    I see you deactivated all plugins except WooCommerce but the issue persists, have you also switched the theme to Storefront? It could be an issue with the theme, so I recommend that you follow the steps for a full conflict test.

    This is a bit more extreme so please make a backup of the database before attempting.

    Have you tried deactivating all plugins and then deleting the action scheduler tables from the database? If you haven’t, that’s what I would try next. Completely remove them. Then activate the standalone Action Scheduler plugin so it’ll generate the tables for you.

    Then activate WooCommerce and the others. See what happens at that point.

    Hi,

    @rainfallnixfig I did deactivate all, including WC, despite the fact that other plugins are activated/deactivated, when WC is activated than the DB is growing large!!! When I deactivate WC, than there is no new errors in DB, doesn’t matter if other plugins are activated or deactivated.

    @3sonsdevelopment so, not to empty the table, but to delete all 4 tables completely from DB?

    I’ve found some kind of same errors by other users here or on GitHub, saying maybe to do the following written down. I didn’t had time yet, but will check what you wrote and there ideas, hopefully nothing will get broken ??

    Open /wp-admin/options.php page on your site.
On this page find options schema-ActionScheduler_LoggerSchema, schema-ActionScheduler_StoreSchema, and action_scheduler_migration_status and remove their values (leave them empty), save options changes.
Activate on the Plugins page the Woocommerce plugin again.

    At this point, I do think making a backup and then removing those tables would be a good move. Feel free to take those out of the options table too again after a backup has been made.

    The goal is to try and get the action scheduler set up from a clean slate.
