I discovered today this inside my wp-content folder (where plugins & theme folder lives): index.php

    I open this index.php and this is what’s inside: <?php //silence is golden. ?>

Is this suppose to be in wp-content? Is it spam?`

  • Nope, they just started adding that in there, with the WordPress downloads. =) I think they just started doing that, not too long ago actually.. If I remember right..?? =/

I remember before, when there wasn’t any there, I used to add my own versions of the index.php file in there.. =P

Hey Spencerp – thanks for the quick reply. Do you know Why they (I’m assuming creators of WordPress) added it to my wp-content folder?

What purpose does it do? Can I delete it without effecting my wordpress install?

    xx

If you like people browsing your directories (assuming you haven’t disabled that at the web server level) then by all means, remove it!

In other words, it’s a simple way to stop folks from poking about in the even the host hasn’t already prevented such investigations… ??

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner.. =( Was replying in another thread.. ?? Thanks Handy, for handling it.. =) Yuppers, Handy summed it up pretty good! ??

Ok. So in other words, leave it be and it will protect me from all the nasties?

    Thanks for the info. Appreciated.

You’re welcome, even though Handy was the one that really answered your question lol… =) =P

Well, He and I are both awesome, so I guess it doesn’t matter.. hahaha. =P

Actually, no it doesn’t prevent it. I just found my entire plugins folder being indexed even WITH this new index.php file in the content folder.
