• Hi folks

I’ve been battling with a bit of a strange feed issue…

Many of us podcasters want to include as many episodes as possible in our feeds, to make sure that older episodes still continue to get picked up.

However, ever since I released episode 102, my feed has been bouncing between just displaying episodes 1 to 101, or displaying 1 to the latest episode. Sometimes this changes every few seconds in the feed.

Probably the easiest way to see the feed change the number of episodes that are included is to subscribe to the show in the iPhone Podcasts app and refresh the feed. At the time of writing the latest episode of the show is episode 153. If you refresh the feed like this, sometimes you should see every episode and sometimes you should only see episodes 1 to 101.

I interviewed Dustin Hartzler recently, and he’s up to episode 287 in his feed. He even users Feedburner – although I don’t think he uses PowerPress. However, it still shows me that is should be possible to display many more episodes.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I am not sure what Dustin is using, I think he is solely using FeedBurner to make his podcast. If you are looking for a WordPress podcast using PowerPress, please check out the WP Tavern: https://wptavern.com/feed/podcast/

As for the number of items in your feed, you can set this to 300. Go into PowerPress Settings > Feeds tab, in the “items per feed” setting set to 300. Just below this there is another option “Feed Maximizer”, please check this as well. This will prevent WordPress from blowing up your feed with extra RSS tags that are unnecessary for podcasting.

The “Jumping” behavior may not be the feed. What you describe sounds like how the Apple iOS podcast app works. Once you listen to an episode it tries to make it go away (like a DVR). To truly test, I would recommend getting another Apple device and subscribe to your podcast, then click the “feed” tab to verify that all of your episodes are present.

More importantly is that your listing on iTunes lists the episodes you want listed. I looked at your iTunes listing (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/digital-marketing-radio-online/id916119100?mt=2) and it shows all 157 episodes.

iTunes does have a limit which is 300. Once you have your 301st episode (you are more than 1/2 way there already) you will have to deal with your oldest episode no longer being listed in your feed and on iTunes.

Many professional podcasts use this to their advantage and will set a limit of say 100 or 50 and use a post roll ad in their shows encouraging listeners to go to their website for access to the complete archive. TWIT for example uses 10 episodes in their feed, if you want the archive you have to visit their website. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/this-week-in-tech-mp3/id73329404?mt=2 Most independent podcasters are less concerned about website traffic so your goal may be to set the item limit to 300. I am just providing this as an example.

    Hi Angelo

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

In answer to a couple of your suggestions:
    – My maximum number of items in my feed has always been set at 200
    – The ‘feed maximizer’ option has also always been ticked

You also mentioned that you looked at my iTunes listing and it displayed all 157 episodes. Unfortunately this too sometimes reverts to only displaying the first 101 episodes.

I’m afraid it’s definitely the feed that appears to be the issue – check out this screenshot which I took a few minutes ago. It shows the latest episode as being episode 101.

This continues to happen sporadically – then it will revert back to displaying all the episodes.

    Thanks
    David

    Hi again

Just wondered if anyone else had any suggestions for this one?

It’s definitely the feed that’s flipping back and forth between displaying all the episodes (1 to 154 at the time of writing) and just episodes 1 to 101.

If you look at the feed in incognito mode in your browser you’re more likely to see the 1 to 101 version. I guess that’s because of caching.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    David

    Hey David!

I wish I could chime in with some insight. I’m not too skilled/noticeable when it comes to RSS feeds.

My custom feed needs some more refinement before releasing to the masses. I’m going to subscribe to the thread and see if anyone has suggestions.

A couple things to consider, David. You mentioned caching in one of your replies. Have you tried turning caching off for a few hours to see if that allows the full RSS feed to display properly, without reverting to the shorter feed?

It’s also possible that your WordPress theme or another plugin is causing an issue. This page has some suggestions on how you can check that:

Thanks Shawn, that’s an interesting consideration. I’m going to try turning caching ON for the RSS feed first to see if that makes a difference – and if it doesn’t then I’ll try disabling caching for the whole site…

I’ve been monitoring the feed URL (https://www.digitalmarketingradio.com/feed/podcast) for a while now. Every morning and afternoon during the past week I re-load it in an incognito window (not cached) and I never see it change in length. I also look at your listing on itunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/digital-marketing-radio-online/id916119100?mt=2) to see if anything changes and it always shows 150+ episodes.

I wonder if this is a problem specific to being signed into your site? Does this happen for you when subscribed in an app or only in the browsers? Perhaps you can share screen shots that way we can create the same environment (browser/app) to further test?
