Since the installation of Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on my websites, something strange has occurred with the counting of users (formerly visitors).

My website normally had 400 visitors per day, according to Google Analytics. An almost constant task. So when I looked on Monday I saw 400 visitors for the Sunday before.

With the transition to GA4 this is suddenly different. Now when I look at GA4 on Monday I see 100 users for the Sunday before. But when I look again a few weeks later, GA4’s statement for that same Sunday is suddenly 1000 or even 2000 visitors. So a late assignment/measurement. The assignment varies enormously and is therefore almost unusable.

Do you have the same experience and what should you do with it?

    Greetings
    Loek

    Hi there Loek,

If you’d like to share the following I’d be happy to assist.

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.??
    2. Did you only recently migrate from Universal Analytics (UA) to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), or is this query specifically regarding a drop in traffic while you were already using GA4?

Once we have the above information, we can determine more on this. Note that we can assist with Site Kit specific queries only, and Universal Analytics data is no longer available within the Site Kit dashboard.

It’s also possible that you’re viewing a different metric when looking at the most prominent users metric from analytics.google.com. I say this as the “Users” metric from your GA4 dashboard at analytics.google.com highlights “Active Users”, which can differ from the “Total Users” metric (which is what’s highlighted as “Users” if viewing UA data.

If you’re drop in data is occurring from GA4 only, this may be related Digital Markets Act (DMA) changes, so only visitors who have explicitly given consent are tracked. You’ll find more on this here. This is a requirement in some regions, such as the EEU.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.
