strange characters at ends of sentences and instead of apostrophes

    I’m new to this wordpress thing and helping someone out with getting it set up on a new shared server.

    basically it’s all working now but there are strange characters at the ends of sentences (?, a, “won’t” becomes “wona€?t” etc.) does anyone know if we maybe just have the wrong character encoding? also, it is hosted on a Linux server now, might this be causing a problem? in the wp-config file the character encoding is set to utf8 which I assumed would be correct.

    any ideas?
