I believe the Yoast plugin is causing an issue with special characters (such as quotations, apostrophes, etc.) under image descriptions when trying to share to Pinterest. When I turn off Yoast I do not have this issue.

If there are special characters in the image descriptions, when you try to Pin to Pinterest they display and other characters and numbers. For example, the word doesn’t displays as doesn't

I have searched high and low over the internet trying to find a solution. Any help would be so very appreciated.

Does this happen when you go directly to Pinterest and add a pin? Or does this only happen when you use the share buttons on your site?

I suspect this only happens with the share buttons as I couldn’t reproduce when I attempted to share directly on Pinterest. If this is the case, Yoast SEO does not control the output for the share buttons. The best team to help you with the share button output is the plugin or theme that outputs the buttons.

    Thank you for your reply.

I had previously reached out to the social share button support and they were unable to help me.

I did try several different social share button plugins and all gave me the same result of the strange character displays underneath pin image options.

I also found that those strange displays went away when I deactivated BOTH Yoast and Jetpack. When using Yoast alone or Jetpack alone I still saw the problem.

Jetpack suggested I get in touch with my theme support, which I did, and they suggested to contact Yoast.

If you have any further suggestions to try I would be so appreciative. At this point I feel that I’ve exhausted every avenue to pursue.

I also should mention that the strange character displays are only coming from the text that’s been pulled from the snippet editor in Yoast SEO, and not from descriptions I’ve written in the alt text for the images.

The snippet text is being pulled to put under my Gravatar profile picture as well as under the featured image picture – both these pop up as images to pin as well as any other image I’ve inserted into the post itself.

    Thank you so much,
    Kendra

Unfortunately, we are not aware of such issues with our plugin. However, if you think the special character is pulling from the Yoast snippet editor, can you please can try removing the description from the snippet editor to check whether this resolves the issue?
