Stopping Emails from Blog Comments

Is there a way to stop comments from sending emails? I tried using Akismet, which worked well. However, I cancelled it to save some money. But now I’m back to getting many emails from all the spam comments at my blog.

Is the only solution to remove the ability to leave comments? On that note, how do you do remove the “comment” functionality from your blog?
