Stopped getting Analytics with Tag Manager enabled
-
Last week, I added the Google Site Kit plugin to my WordPress site, and enabled both Google Analytics and Tag Manager. Then, data stopped flowing for Google Analytics. I checked all the settings and everything looked fine. I disabled Tag Manager in Site Kit, and Analytics started working again.
Any ideas why Tag Manager blocked analytics from working, and how I can get both working nicely in Site Kit?

Hi @jmartenspdx,
Thanks for getting in touch, and sorry to hear you’ve been encountering trouble when inserting both a Tag Manager snippet alongside a Google Analytics snippet. Site Kit only inserts the snippets on a users site so I therefore suspect there may a particular tag or feature within the connected container that may be impacting reporting.
So we can determine more on this please share the following:
- Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
- Are you familiar with all the tags you have inserted within your Google Tag Manager container? By that I mean have you added any custom HTML tags, or other services that have the ability to modify your Analytics tracking?
Once we have the above we can inspect your site and see if we notice anything unusual. Feel free to also reactivate the Tag Manager module within Site Kit while sharing the above, so I can check whether your Analytics tags are firing at present.
@jamesosborne One question for you….do I need a Tag setup in Google Tag Manager? Meaning, we created a GTM account, but didn’t create a tag. Is that the problem, I needed to do more setup in GTM for Analytics to flow?
Hi @jmartenspdx,
It’s not a problem to connect a Tag Manager container using Site Kit, even if the container you add doesn’t have any active tags. This doesn’t have any impact on Analytics reporting.
Note that I also checked the Site Health information form that you kindly shared. I didn’t spot anything unusual with your site setup. I also inspected your site manually and by using the tagassistant.google.com service, and I can see that your Analytics tag is firing as expected, from the Site Kit placed snippet, both the connected Universal Type Analytics snippet and a GA4 snippet.
Let me know if you have any further questions on this and I’d be happy to assist further! Feel free to also reactivate the same container you had previously, when connecting the Tag Manager module within Site Kit. I can then check your site once more to ensure all works fine!
Well, I am still unsure why I can’t use Tag Manager with Site Kit. It is off now, and things work fine. When it was on, things didn’t work. What gives?
You can indeed use Tag Manager with Site Kit. Please connect Tag Manager within Site Kit once more, while I then check your site once more to confirm the same Analytics tags are firing (with Tag Manager active).
Let me know once it’s connected so I can check your site once more.
@jamesosborne Thanks. I have temporarily reconnected Tag Manager. Please let me know once you have reviewed.
Thanks for the update. I’ve checked your site now and I can see different Analytics snippets firing, one of which is the Site Kit placed snippet. I can confirm that all is working fine with the Site Kit placed snippets, both a Universal Type snippet and a Google Analytics 4 snippet, with the tags recording my visit.
You can check this yourself using the tagassistant.google.com service. You may also wish to check using the Google Analytics real time reporting tool.
Let me know if you have any questions on the above and I’d be happy to assist.
Thanks for your help, James. Seems my new GA4 property is getting data, but my UA property is not.
That made me wonder, in Site Kit, do I need to have both Tag Manger and Analytics enabled, or just Tag Manager since it controls Analytics?

No problem. I’ve checked your site at present and indeed I don’t see any UA property tracking.
From checking your sites source code it looks like you have selected the option to not allow Site Kit to insert the UA snippet for you. I only see a Site Kit placed GA4 snippet.
In order to solve this all you need to do is to allow Site Kit to insert a UA snippet, by visiting the Site Kit settings (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit).
That made me wonder, in Site Kit, do I need to have both Tag Manger and Analytics enabled, or just Tag Manager since it controls Analytics?
It’s up to users to decide. You could remove the Analytics tags within your Tag Manager set up if you prefer to use Site Kit, or you could use Tag Manager as you have done for your GA4 snippet.
If you choose to use Site Kit to insert both your GA4 and UA snippet then you may wish to not connect the Tag Manager module within Site Kit, or manually insert the Tag Manager snippets on your site.
Let me know if you have any questions with the above.
That option is greyed out, I am unable to turn it on. Below it says “the code is controlled by the Tag Manager module.”
Hi @jmartenspdx,
Many thanks for the update. Interesting that the option to allow Site Kit to insert the UA snippet is greyed out, with that notice. While this was the behavior previously, with the current Site Kit version – which you have active, the plugin should now inform you of any existing snippets, while still allowing you to place a UA snippet also via Site Kit. See below the current behavior for existing snippets, placed via Tag Manager:
As there are not caching plugins active from checking your Site Health information would it be possible for you to uninstall Site Kit and install once more? I ask as something may have went wrong with your plugin update.
After doing so please inform me whether you can enable the option to allow Site Kit to insert the UA snippet on your site.
I just removed and re-added the Site Kit plugin. Still seems I’m only getting real-time user data in the GA4 property, not the UA property.
And the option to place the Universal Tracking code is still not something i can change, it is greyed out.
Thanks for checking this. So I can discuss this with the team, or try to recreate this behavior would you be able to share the following:
- A screenshot of your Analytics settings page, within Site Kit? I’d like to see the full notice you’re encountering, and the greyed out UA placement option.
- What tags have you added to your Google Tag Manager container?
You can use a service such as JumpShare or Imgur to share a screenshot, and use the same form previously used to share privately if preferred.
While you share the above you may also wish to remove any Universal Analytics tag within your Tag Manager container (from the tagmanager.google.com service). After doing so you can then use Site Kit to insert the UA snippet.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sent, thanks!
