Stock count not updated when manually entering participants

I have added participants manually to a course by going through WooCommerce > Orders > Add Order. I set the course name/type and the (date) variation. The order appears to have been entered properly. But now when I view the course page (above) it still shows “4 items in stock” i.e. 4 spaces left on the course. It should say “only 1 left in stock” because I have added three people to the course. Any idea why it doesn’t update the stock count for this variation? I tried it with “manage stock at variation” level turned on and also with “manage stock at product level”. Either way the result is the same.
