I find reference books about framework usually gets quickly outdated. If it’s under active development, it’s even worse and this ‘reference book’ is almost useless after a few years. Having said that, I wonder if this book “Professional WordPress: Design and Development 2nd Edition” is still good to have. I’m interested in learning WP and ready to jump into a deeper level of this framework… but not with an old & useless reference book..

What’s your opinion? Has WP been improved a lot since this book was published? Is the structure of WP changed a lot since this book?

    Thanks!!!

  • First, let me start by saying that I personally own Professional WordPress: Design and Development 2nd Edition. I haven’t used it a ton, although it is a good reference book. It is definitely more advanced than a WordPress for Dummies book or something.

WordPress is changing every day, literally. There is no book out there that offers a 100% up to date WordPress rundown. They all get old after a year or so when a few new major versions of WordPress hit, bringing new features, new dashboard layout, new plugins, new themes… etc.

I personally learn just as much, if not even more about WordPress by reading articles and contributing through the WordPress forums. So if you really want to grow in your WordPress skills, I would encourage you to not just turn to books, but also look around online. Contributing to WordPress is one of the best ways that you can learn about WordPress.

If you are going to buy the Professional WordPress: Design and Development, buy the 3rd Edition. It covers WordPress 4.1 instead of like WordPress 3.x something…
