I’ve been trying to get WordPress to run on my Apache2 server. I’ve installed php and I know it works, because it functions as expected for other files that were set up to test php.

This is running on a Window XP machine.

I also checked the php.ini file to make sure that the memory was 16M.

I still get nothing but a blank screen when I try to run the install.php.

I’ve been through these forum and they only address the memory issue. I’ve also reviewed all the tutorials for installing WordPress, but they all show the process as proceeding flawlessly. Nothing addresses this issue.

    Why doesn’t this work?

I deleted the marks and hit enter to move that line to the next line down. I only did this to make the file easier for me to see, rather than having to scroll left and right.

I’m using a text editor (Notepad). It sees those marks.

I also am using an HTML editor. It, however, does not see those marks. They also do not show up in this window when I paste the code (for displaying in this blog).

That’s the problem there. Get the original wp-config file from the archive you downloaded. Then add that file back to your wordpress and edit the file again this time not removing anything but what you have to change in between the quotes.

Don’t use notepad. Use a real text editor, like TextPad or one of half a dozen others. Notepad/Wordpad: they break things.

Ok. I’ll get replacements for the files I changed.

Let me make those changes and I’ll let you know in a couple of minutes what the result was.

    Notepad/Wordpad: they break things.

I learned that the hard way awhile ago. Then I switched to Linux and life is good.

Really, Otto? I’ve *never* had a problem with NotePad. It’s pretty much all I use. I’ve never heard of having issues with it – how odd! (WordPad, yes – but Notepad? Never.) (Just an aside here guys – sorry for going off-tangent- that just surprises me!)

That seems to be the culprit this time. I know I’ve done the same thing. Ummm what are these little blocks I don’t need those.

    Holy php, Batman! It’s working!

I replaced the files with the originals I had on hand. Those stupid little rectangles meant the difference between functionality and uselessness.

    Who’d a’ thunk it.

Mark this as Resolved. Resolved the heck out of. ??

Notepad is crap. It does weird things like recognizing files as being unicode when they’re not, it does weird things with regard to CR/LF characters, the files it produces are often not cross-platform (won’t work properly when you upload them to unix systems), etc.

TextPad is a far, far, far better editor for plain text. Although it ain’t free (nagware), it’s fully functional for free. It’s my favorite text editor on Windows, although everybody has their own choices there.

But notepad never works properly except for extremely simple tasks.

Wow – so weird. I’ve honestly never had issues with it – used it for years.

However, i *would* like a text editor that has line numbers. *That* is one thing I don’t like about Notepad – I can’t see line numbers.

I’ll have to look into TextPad and see if it does that – thanks for the tip ??
