Still Needed? Alternatives?

I’ve had this plugin for several years, never any problems. But, it’s been a long time since it was updated and I understand WordPress now automatically uses ImageMagick instead of the standard GD image library.

Is there any reason to continue using this plugin or is it just slowing down my site and exposing me to potential security issues?

I have a very large site with over 20,000 images on 2,000+ daily post from the past 6 years. The site is slowing down, so I’m looking for ways to speed things up without compromising image quality. The page below is fairly typical of those on my site.
