still cannot add mailto link in 2.2.3

Dear Sirs:

I have not been here in a while and I do not see anything new on this topic. Even in 2.2.3, which I just installed a short time ago, I cannot conveniently add a mailto link in the sidebar (blogroll/category section) to contact the author. It is discouraging. I do see some reference in the code about “mailto” but since I cannot read most code I cannot say whether it is intended to allow mailto links or disallow them. The “@” character is always deleted by WordPress. I have learned to add my mailto link through different means, but it certainly is more inconvenient. Is it by design that adding a mailto link in this manner should not work, is the function just not operating the way it should, or am I missing something? I see that there is now a version 2.3 available. Can anyone tell me if this function has been improved/corrected in that version? As always, thank you for your time.
