Hi — I’ve been using the free version of Jetpack, with Stats, for years. I don’t get much traffic, but every now and then I’d get a unique visitor, and I’ve been curious about how they got there. For every unique visit, I could see when it was and where they came from (referrer). I’d start by opening up the day in question to get these details. Now I can’t seem to do that. All it shows is the number of visitors, but no referrers. Am I not seeing how to do this, or has that feature been moved to the paid version?

  • Hello,

It seems like Jetpack may have made some changes to its feature set for free and paid versions. In the past, Jetpack Stats allowed users to see basic visitor information, including referrers, without needing a paid plan. If you’re no longer seeing referrers or detailed visitor data, here’s what could be happening:

    1. Feature Change: Jetpack has likely moved more detailed stats, like referrers and individual visitor tracking, behind a paywall. They’ve been updating their pricing and feature structure over time to encourage users to upgrade to their paid plans.

    2. Interface Update: The free version might still offer limited referrer data, but it could now be less accessible or displayed differently. Sometimes, interface updates make familiar features harder to find.

    3. Jetpack Site Settings: Ensure your site’s Jetpack settings are fully configured and connected to your WordPress.com account. Sometimes, missing features can be due to a disconnected site or outdated plugin version.

    What You Can Do:

Double-Check Stats Settings: Visit the Site Stats section in your WordPress.com dashboard or your Jetpack settings within your WordPress site. Look for any toggles or options related to referrers.

Update Jetpack: Ensure you’re running the latest version of Jetpack, as updates can fix missing features or bugs.
Check Jetpack Plans: Visit the Jetpack Plans page to see if detailed referrer data is now part of a paid plan.

Alternative Analytics Tools: If you’re not satisfied with Jetpack’s current offerings, consider using alternative analytics tools, like Google Analytics or StatCounter, which provide detailed visitor tracking and referrer data for free.

If you confirm this feature has moved to the paid version, Jetpack likely made the change to enhance its paid service value. For occasional traffic, free analytics tools might be a better fit without requiring an upgrade.

Let me know if you’d like assistance setting up an alternative analytics solution!

    Hi @davidsortof

Thanks for contacting Jetpack support. It sounds like you’re experiencing an issue with viewing referrer details in Jetpack Stats. The ability to see referrer information should still be available in the free version of Jetpack Stats. However, there are a few reasons why you might not be seeing this information:

Privacy Changes: Recent changes in privacy policies by search engines and browsers have impacted how referrer data is reported. This means that Jetpack Stats may not always receive referrer information, even if visitors come to your site via a search engine or another site.

Referrer Discrepancies: Some referrers might be marked as spam and won’t appear in your stats.

Viewing Referrers: To view referrer details, you can access the Traffic view in your Jetpack Stats dashboard.

Here’s how: – Go to your site’s WP Admin – Navigate to Jetpack → Stats. – Click the Traffic tab to see referrer data.

Could you please post your site URL here so that we can have a look?

Hi Thanks Bruce, and sure, it’s here: https://www.davidweiss.net. By the way under Referrers, I don’t see any data, I just see:

    ——————————————————

    [Megaphone icon]

We’ll show you which websites are referring visitors to your site so you can discover where your audience comes from. Start sharing!

Share on social media with one click

    ——————————————————

and if I follow “View More” it shows basically the same as the above.

Oh and I forgot to say, if I click on “referring visitors” it takes me to a page where that phrase is defined.

    Hello there,
Sebastian from Jetpack here. I hope you are doing well.

I was able to see your referrers on your WordPress.com account at: https://wordpress.com/stats/day/davidweiss.net

Are you still having this issue?
Is this happening on your WP Admin dashboard https://davidweiss.net/wp-admin/admin.php?page=stats?

    Please let us know.

Hey Sebastian, thanks! Yes, I DO see referrers there, on my wp.org dashboard. But what I can’t do is see the referrers for a particular day. That’s when I get the blank results I posted above. But maybe there was no info for that particular day, or several? Hm, I’ll check that out and report back. : )

    (@davidsortof)

Ah! That’s it! I wasn’t looking at it correctly. on some days, there’s just no referral data available, I guess. : ) thanks for helping me brainstorm through this!
