Static Homepage that Pulls Posts from News & Events?

Looking for some direction on how to create a static homepage that somewhere on the page, probably sidebar, I can display the 3 most recent posts from only my News category and my Events Category. So basically in the sidebar there would be six posts (title only linked to that post). Three for News and three for Events. Not really sure where or how to get started on this.
Wanting it to look something like this…
News
Most recent news post title
2nd most recent news post title
3rd most recent news post titleEvents
Most recent event post title
2nd most recent event post title
3rd most recent event post title
