Static Homepage Keeps Redirecting

So my site is protected with a user login. For those users that enter a correct name and password, I can choose any redirect page. This function is working. HOWEVER, the homepage I choose as the static homepage doesn’t show – it redirects to this URL

Doesn’t show the correct page, and gives this odd message in the body:

Please login with your username and password.
