You need to delete the https://www.mydomain.com and just have the /%postname%/ in your custom permalink

/%postname%/ generates the post/page URL as https://www.mydomain.com/whatevername/

If I want the reference to read https://www.mydomain.com/whatevername e.g. without the last slash can I alter the permalink to
/%postname%

or is there some coding protocol/need to have the last slash?

removing the last slash makes no difference to how your web address is displayed in the search bar, hope this has resolved your query.
