Static front page: no box, no post, no credits

Hello everyone,
I’m still very new to WP, so forgive me if I’m asking anything stupid, obvious or easy-to-solve. I’ve searched this forum, but couldn’t find any piece of advice that helped me.While I think that Hitchcock is a great theme, and have built most of my site according to my needs using a gallery plugin, I want the homepage, or start page, to display just a full-screen image and the title of my site (plus the top menu for the sub pages).
That’s all. I would also like to either remove altogether, or alter the copyright section in the footer area.
I am sure there must be a way this can be done, but I can’t figure out how.
As yet, there is a white box in the middle of the image. If I change the settings to “show your latest posts”, that box disappears, but the copyright section is moved up and sits right below the title line. Not what I want, really.
Maybe someone can help me.
P.S. The header image seems kind of blurred and subdued – I guess that’s on purpose, but is there any way way to alter its appearance?
