Statement on WordPress/Jetpack: Is PHP 7 now REQUIRED?

I know you are busy dealing with the fallout of Jetpack white-screening some sites, but I would very much appreciate clarification on whether or not PHP 7 is now required for WordPress/Jetpack.
If not, I would also like to know if you will be working on a new version that won’t white-screen PHP 5.x sites.

The third pinned post at the top deals with those questions
* We’ve made some changes to the Sitemaps feature in Jetpack 4.8, and inadvertently used code that isn’t compatible with old versions of PHP (PHP 5.3 or less).
* We’ll release a new update very soon to solve that problem.
