• I am an OAP but have taught myself to use a computer & built a large leather site using GlobalScape Cute Site Builder its been running for 4 years. I have a Blog on Blogger & one on Big Daddy. I am okay with anything straight out of the box. At the beggining of the week I downloaded Word Press. it says a 5 min instalation? I am still trying to work out how I get that collection of separate pages on-line as a Bloogging site. Open in your browser? what browser? open a folder What folder am I supposed to open in word pad? I have got folders full of free & paid for programs like this in files on my computer that I cant get to work. How does one do this I cant be the only one with these sort of problems.

  • Amen to that!! The installation instructions are far from clear to anyone who is not a programmer. I am sure they get many complaints from beginners on this subject. When I install wordpress thru my service provider, it pops right thru the steps and is up an running in short order. when installing wordpress from a download to the server, you just as well kiss that sucker goodbye, its a gone’er!! It would be great if some, kind, generous developer would make an installation file with a ‘go’ button in it. I believe that with this done, wordpress would greatly increase it’s market penetration, and non geeks wouldn’t toss it in the recycle bin in frustration.

Aside from changing 3 lines in the config.php file, the installation is a basic “go” button. (upload files via FTP), navigate in your web browser to /wp-admin/install.php, and the rest is done for you.

If you are not inclined to install this your self, or use fantastico type installation, you can always go wordpress.com and get a blog there.

Also, the online documentation is very thorough

    Getting_Started_with_WordPress#Installation

And the support forums are always here for helping through a few steps.

Finally, I believe this service is still active

Thanks for that link miklb, it should prove very helpful. I finaly figured out what they meant in the instructions to open the install.php file in a browser ha ha. You think they mean clicking on the file and it will open, all that does is trigger your html editor. This is what they mean.
https://www.example.com/wordpress/admin/install.php ” now that works, except I get a 404 error. Owell, back to the drawing board.

404 means your WP install is NOT where you are looking for it, i.e. not in the subfolder named “wordpress”.

ooops sorry for that link, didn’t mean for it to be active.

Which link? As a basic rule: never use “mysite” or “yoursite” etc. for examples! They are real domains. ICANN has reserved
    example.com
    example.net
    example.org – for what’s in their name: EXAMPLES ??
    Use those.

    alrighty, thank you.
