• I just started for a company and one of my main tasks is to redo their website. The previous gal that set up the website did a poor job of doing it and we want to completely start over. There is a random link embedded in the background of several pages which I cannot find where it lives to get rid of it. Plus it looks a bit outdated, colors are wrong, etc. I know we could change the theme to get a new look, but we want to essentially trash the one she did and start anew.

The main questions is how do I do this without taking our site completely down? Would I have to create a new account and then change the domain to the new account once I’ve designed the new site? None of us here know any real technical language so please dumb down any responses.

    Thank you for your help!

  • The random link probably means the site was compromised at one point or another. Do a scan at https://sitecheck3.sucuri.net/ to confirm.

You can create a subdomain inside the current installation. I do this on my site all the time for my client sites, so they can keep track of development. You’d need to create a second database and link the subsite to it.

When you’re done, you’d just transfer everything up to the parent domain or wherever you need it.

Doing it this way, the URL would be subsite.sitename.com.

You can password protect the site entirely, so no one can view it and set robot.txt to nofollow so it doesn’t get index.

That’s the best ‘dumbed down’ response I can give.
