Stars rating displaying as numbers or not at all

Stars rating system will not display properly. I have attempted some of the suggested fixes, IE – moving from above/below, filling in all Vcard data etc. but wtill am only showing a numbering system (if that) by default. When I roll over or select a number it does change to stars(which I changed to a blue color.
The stars file is the same dimensions and is located on the server.

Looks to be an old problem, but still an issue for me.
Any ideas from anyone? Maybe a theme conflict? I have deactivated/reactivated and even uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
