In September I backed up my database then upgraded to WordPress 4.0.

Yesterday my database became corrupted, so I have been trying to import the backup I made using version 3.9 as it’s the only one I have.

I imported with the settings UTF-8 encoding, and everything is initially fine viewing the website without logging in (no spurious characters).

When I log into WordPress I get a button telling me to click to upgrade the database. After I do this step, the spurious characters appear.

    Any advice please?

    Hi,

Can you please a screenshot of the problem?

I’ve sorted it now, thanks. I downloaded WordPress 3.9, copied the files across, then logged into WordPress and upgraded to 4.0. Fortunately it worked, no spurious characters.
