splitting a long post–how?

Hi folks – I’m trying to split a lengthy post on my blog so it doesn’t hog the whole front page. All other posts are short enough to live without splits. I’ve tried the more tag, and though it was in the html, the preview didn’t split the post or include a link to the remainder of the post, so I didn’t publish. Next I tried the nextpage tag. The preview looked good, so I posted it, but the post did not contain the link. It just stopped where I’d put the tag. I’m using wordpress 2.0. Is there a simple way to do this, what is basically a “jump” in the newspaper world? Any help greatly appreciated.
