Split Categories with Headings

Is it possible to divide category links with headings, without resorting to sub menus.
An example:
Main (heading)
Weblog (link)
(space)
Reviews (heading)
Books (link)
Movies (link)
Each link would be a main category, the headings would divide the categories by topic. I was concerned that if I delete the category php bit in the index.php that the categories would stop functioning?
My idea was to remove that, and in it’s place copy and paste the link to the category, and divide it using html.
Suggestions?
