A strange problem: the black diamond character, which I routinely modify and use to create my own bullet markers without actually having to create actual text bullets, is suddenly missing today from the special characters menu in classic mode. It’s not the only character missing. Mouseover suggests the characters are still there, but I can’t access or insert them.

Worse still, each instance where my modified diamond bullet appeared in any of my blog posts has vanished. All of them. I have a bunch of bullet-like bits of text that are now no longer bullets, but rather weird fragments hanging in mid-air in a bunch of posts that it appears I must go back and edit individually.

I gather from some searching that the special characters menu has been the source of some issues since Gutenberg came along, so I’m not especially happy to see that it’s still creating issues.

I’ve tried clearing caches and minified bits and pieces, but with no effect on the problem. It’s as if the character suddenly ceased to exist, and all instances of it ceased to exist right along with the original menu option.

If anyone knows of a fix, I’d love to hear about it…

    Thanks!

    Okay, it’s getting weirder.

This morning, the missing special characters were back, and my custom bullets reappeared magically. All of them. In all my posts.

Great, I thought — I don’t know what’s going on, but the characters are back so let’s not be picky about how and why they reappeared. Maybe everything is back to normal…

Unfortunately, this proved to be wishful thinking on my part. I was setting up a new post and suddenly realized that my recurring affiliate links/banners in previous post had disappeared.

    All of them.

So, I guess at this stage, I have only one question: what the hell is going on?

I recognize that this may or may not be a WordPress problem, so I’m going to get into it with the folks over at StudioPress. I recently upgraded to the latest version of the Genesis Framework. I can’t imagine it being the root of the problem, but I’m going to check anyway.

    Stranger things have happened…

    Problem is SOLVED.

I recently switched browsers. I’d been using Google Chrome but decided for various reasons that it was time for a change.

I switched to the 64-bit version of FireFox 66.0.1. Significantly faster than Chrome on my system, with plenty of useful add-ons. Everything seemed to work well, but I was getting set for a bit of a holiday and hadn’t used it to work on my site.

It turns out that FireFox blocks certain types of content by default — like my affiliate links, most of which it seems to regard as evil, and their associated images. As soon as I turned off content-blocking completely on my site, everything returned to normal.

The devil is, as usual, in the details. Going to post a little note on my site to remind FireFox users that they may need to turn off content-blocking if they want to get the full-meal deal…
