Speaking Questions Don’t Work on Phones

  • Hi,

    I have some speaking exercises “Speak The Words Set”. Even if I use Chrome, I press the Speak button and it doesn’t respond to my answer. It simply shows “Listening” indefinitely. It seems to be working on the desktop, but it’s pretty slow to check the answers. On the admin panel, it’s really fast…

    What could be the reason for this?

    Hi,

    Which “phones” is it not working on? Note that this feature requires an up-to-date browser and device. It also relies on a third-party API for decoding the sound and that the browser could possibly block this for privacy reasons. Using HTTPS is often required.

    Hello,

    Any smartphone (new with latest google chrome browser) shows the same issue. I’m using HTTPS on all pages.

    The exercises page (where H5P is used) is behind a paywall. I can make a paid account for you to check the page if that’s ok. Do you have an email I can send the login credentials?

    It should work fine on Android using Chrome. Did you experience anything different (you didn’t mention the operating system)?

    Apple still refuse to support the Web Speech API that the content type is using. Apple also forces other browser vendors to use Apple’s webkit engine in iOS, so technically every browser on iOS is a variation of Safari that suffers from the lack of support for the Web Speech API.

    The H5P core team (guess they’re busy, so that’s why they have not responded) will not be able to fix this. Tim Cook can.

    I haven’t tried it on an Apple iOS device or a Mac.

    I’m trying this on a Windows 10 with latest Google Chrome browser and also an Android phone with latest Chrome browser.
