Spammy structured markup

  • I have been using this plugin for a few months with good results – I am getting gold stars under my searches, however I have just received a Google Penalty

    Markup on some pages on this site appears to use techniques such as marking up content that is invisible to users, marking up irrelevant or misleading content, and/or other manipulative behavior that violates Google’s Spammy Structured Markup guidelines

    Anyone else had this, not sure what to do?

    Did the message you receive provide any indication of what content on your site led to this penalty? Can you confirm that it is connected to the reviews at all?

    I’ve had a look at your site and I didn’t see anything that looked inappropriate in the reviews themselves.

    This is the first I’ve heard of anything like this, and the markup in the plugin follows Google’s own recommendations, so it could be that some other markup led to the penalty. Or it could be that they consider the particular reviews you marked up to be illegitimate (though I don’t have any reason to believe that would be the case).
