• I had problems with spam in wordpress, i turned on that users need to register for posting comments. Now i have problem that i still receive spams. I think it may be becasuse spambot remebers ‘post’ vars for sending comment and system only disabled form for sending, but still accepts posts (via direct http request) – so normlan user can’t post anything, but robot can after i turned on that users need to register.

    [sorry for ma terrible english]

  • I suggest you install/activate Akismet and Bad Behavior (plugins).

But that solves a result (or is supposed to solve) and not reason \:

Most spam received these days is not comment spam, but trackback and pingback spam. Plugins like Akismet and Bad Behavior are the only real solutions to the problem. Disabling comments and other things like that don’t really solve anything.

I am not sure I understand your last post.
Anyway, having the plugins you don’t need the registration turned on – so humans can post comments without any problem but the spam scripts will be blocked.

This is example page where i have spam isuses https://www.loli.cz/?p=80 – i don’t see anything like pingback or traceback – so how do i know it is normal comment or ping/trace back?

This has been dicussed previously, many times and at great length.

You were offered a solution, and it’s a good one. If you want more enlightenment about how ping/trackback spam can occur then I suggest you use the search facility.

more like how can i know what is ping/track back and what normaln comment.
Anyway disabling ping and trackback will fix MY spam problem if there is no bug in posting comments in wordpress?

Lolitka: Turning off various features is not a solution to a spam problem. Ever.

I mean, you could take the website down entirely and that would stop spam too, but it’s not really a solution.

If you want to stop spam, then the *ONLY* way to do that is to install spam blocking plugins. Akismet. Bad Behavior. Install them. Activate them. Love them.

I have some ‘filosophy’ about this (:, so i will try it and hope it will work, when spambots starts to register and validate registration then i think i will need some anispam tools …

Why are people so reluctant to install these plugins? I mean, they just *work*. They’re hassle free, you don’t have to go to any effort to do it… I mean, how is going to extreme efforts to disable this/that/the other thing any easier than just installing a plugin and activating it? It’s not like you have to configure it or anything. It just sits there blocking spam. Done. Easy.

Because it __can__ block a real comment? At last i think it can from what i read in description …

Not really. Bad Behavior doesn’t block comments at all, it blocks certain types of bots from accessing the site by seeing that they are bots.

Akismet can block a comment (actually it flags them and you can correct it and it will learn from that correction), but I’ve had like 3 legitimate comments blocked out of several thousand spams. So I don’t see that it’s really a big deal.

And anyway, you’re talking about turning comments off for most readers entirely, so how is that any different?

Having everyone registred is not bad … at last for me (:

Requiring registration generally means that people won’t bother to comment. This topic has come up before on this forum. I know that even if I have something to contribute to somebody’s post, if I have to go through any kind of hassle to do it, including registration or captchas, I will just close the site instead of bothering with it.
