Spam Plugins: akismet vs. bad behavior

    Because I am not really all that knowledgable about the latter, I would like to know if having Akismet installed negates the need for Bad Behavior or if it’s a good idea to have both installed or what. I understood that bad behavior works a little more preemptively (in keeping bots from even posting) than akismet but I don’t know if that is a correct assumption.

    I am truly not all that knowledgeable with how these spam plugins work– or how spambots work in general, so I apologize if I sound like an idiot.

  • From what I understand:
    BB stops them before they hit the server, Akismet deals with what is posted.

    So if a spammer wants to hit your site 100 times a minute, BB would stop that, Akismet would not.
    But if a spammer submits a comment, BB is no use but Akismet will deal with it.

    Use both ??

    I am. To experiment, I turned BB off and got 9 spams in the three hours it was off. All caught by akismet.

    Apparently I can get perscription drugs from all sorts of places.

    But for a small range of ‘ailments’ I find ??

    Akismet requires a WordPress key, which I signed up for. In doing so, I had to create a xxx.wordpress.com website.

    Can I use that key on my own domain instead of the xxx.wordpress.com site?

    Yes – the key is for your own domain.
