    Hello,

Spam Comment bots have been commenting on products for the last 2 weeks
Star ratings should be required They are commenting without a Star rating even though it is checked
I could not understand whether this problem is caused by Woocommerce or the theme
When I try to comment manually, I get a Star rating is required.
But spambots can comment without choosing a star rating.

  • Hi there,

Just wanted to give you a heads up that WooCommerce requires a star rating for comments by default. So, unless spambots find a way to bypass the system, they won’t be able to leave a comment without choosing a rating.

However, it’s possible that the theme or another plugin on your website is causing this issue. I suggest you try switching to the default Storefron theme and check if the problem persists. If it does, then it could be a plugin conflict.

To resolve the plugin conflict issue, I recommend disabling all plugins except WooCommerce and checking if the problem is resolved. If it is, you can enable the plugins individually to identify the plugin causing the conflict.

I hope this information helps you resolve the issue. Thanks!

    Hi @ottomania

    Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that spam comment bots are able to comment on your products without providing star reviews, correct?

I replicated the scenario on my personal site running on the default Storefront theme, however, I am unable to reproduce the issue on my end as it requires the Star Rating to be clicked as well.

For us to investigate this further, can you please try to switch to the default Storefront theme and only WooCommerce plugin is enabled, create a product review and see if this works?

If so, then this kind of problem is usually caused by your theme or a third-party plugin present on your site. We can run a conflict test to verify this. I’d recommend cloning your site to a staging environment and performing the tests described on this guide without modifying your live site or impacting customers. Many hosts provide staging facilities, so it’s worth checking in with them. It’s also possible to do it using the free WP Staging plugin.

If this was caused by a third-party plugin present on your site, it would be best to reach out to the developers for further assistance here.

If this did not resolve the issue, please share your System Status Report, that will help us further troubleshoot.

You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select Get system report and then Copy for support. Once you’ve done that, you can paste it into your reply here.

If you could also provide the fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.

You could copy and paste your reply here or paste it via https://gist.github.com/ and send the link here.

Let us know how it goes!

    I already said that above
When I try to comment myself, I get the warning that the Star rating is a required field, no problem here.
but comment bots can skip star rating
I can’t switch to another theme because my site is a live site
I contacted the theme maker and he said the same thing
Try it with the default theme so you can test it
I can think of this too, but my site is active, if I do this, I will lose customers

    Hi @ottomania ,

    Thanks for clarifying!

If you don’t want to test on your live site, then you can create a staging site using a plugin called?WP Staging.

Also, one solution is to use a plugin that adds a captcha or other anti-spam measures. The reCaptcha for WooCommerce extension has a feature that adds a WooCommerce Product review captcha, feel free to check it out.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – we’ll be here if and/or when you are ready to continue.

    Thanks.
