Spam and spam subscribers

    Is there a way to decrease the amount of spam subscribers without selecting the “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” field in my blog settings? The only reason why I ask is because I seem to have over 10 spam comments practically each and every day. It is a hassle to delete them constantly and I am trying to see whether there are other ways of avoiding this issue without doing too much behind-the-scenes work.

    If you are wondering why I haven’t checked the “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” field, the only reason is because I want to allow guests to post without having to register to the actual blog.

    Do you have Akismet enabled? I find it catches almost all the Spam, I also have set to comments must be approved in case something gets through.

    Part of my daily ritual now is to log in each morning and double check the Spam folder for missed negatives then hit Empty Spam and 15 to 50 Spam go to the bit bucket and beyond. Sucks but I don’t have to search down the comments. I have all sites the same – anyone can comment.

    The Spammers can be persistent with old links, I used to have a Guest Book and disabled it over 6 months ago and I still get Spammers dropping into what used to be the Guest Book.

    I don’t have to do any of that with the 2 plugins I use – they simply do not get through

    I know it’s been a while but I actually thought I replied to this topic. Thanks for the help either way guys. I’ve installed Bad Behavior so hopefully everything works out well and I don’t get as much spam as I used to.

    I’ll keep you guys updated on the progress if it backfires though.
