I’ve got a spammer that keeps leaving spams in the comments of my logs. I keep removing them, but about 2 minutes ago i acidentally removed ALL comments from my site, and i’d very much like them back. I couldn’t find a ‘removed comments’ section or anything so i was wondering wether wordpress saves removed/reported comments somewhere.

Also, is there some way to stop this guy from spamming? He doesn’t have a user account, yet he still manages to leave them, dispite me having ticked the ‘require account to comment’ box.

he spams once every 3 minutes or so, and does so continuously

  • Hi there, sounds like big heap of trouble to me.
If you’ve deleted the comments then they’ve gone, but no doubt if its as frequent as you say he’ll be back. personally I would immediately make your site, only registered users can comment, and must be logged in.Once he comments again, make sure you write down his IP address, there are plenty of ways to block him once you have the IP.
    good luck.

Hey mike, thanks for the advice, but i’ve already made my site commentable for registered and logged in users only.

About his IP, i’ve got it, but i couldn’t find any built in method of banning this guy from commenting. Is there an such an intergrated function to do that, or will i have to use a seperate plugin for that? (If so, advice would be apreciated)

    Thanks in advance.

Delete means delete. Don’t delete that which you want to not delete. Hope you had a backup of the database.

Also, look closely at the Settings->Discussion page. Specifically: “Comment Blacklist”.

And there are automated solutions to deal with spam:

I’ve activated akismet now, thought it already was activated, but wasn’t.
Shouldn’t have any more problems with it now, thanks for pointing it out Otto.

I’d also like to point out, otto and mikey, akismet found all 3500 spam comments that i deleted myself, still has them stored, and allowed me to mark the ones i acidentally deleted as ‘not spam’, restoring them to the site. So delete didn’t mean delete after all. Just meant ‘remove for now’.

Thanks for the help though, much appreciated.

Hi again, glad to hear Akismet caught them. Also as otto said, the discussions blacklist can be very useful.
I use Akismet and also Bad behaviour which works well together.
And if I need to ban I use this one.

    Glad you made it.
    Mike,
PS. Having thought about it, I’ve learned something myself, as I’m amazed Akismet found them after a delete. Good old Akismet.

Ah. No. Delete does indeed mean delete, however WordPress has two options for marking a comment: “Delete” and “Mark as Spam”. Spam is not deleted, just marked, and yes, you can retrieve them back from the spam bin with Akismet.

So when you said delete, I thought that’s what you used. If you just marked them as spam, then yes, you can get those back.
