Spaces in category

When tweeting a tag you have the option to replace spaces with another character. Unfortunately this option doesn’t seem to exist for categories.
When tweeting a category with a space in it shows as #category with a space, instead of #category-with-a-space.

Is there any way to replace spaces with another character?
