Sorting the events list?

That doesn’t really help, I’m afraid. I am aware of all the options available, I just can’t figure out how to bend them to my will ??

quite a few ways of doing that:
angelo’s suggestion would work
you could use a page with shortcodes and use a shortcode for past and current events, ordering appropriately
create your own scope (see plugin site tutorials section)
