Sort post by a custom field

I’m liking this widget! I’ve used it to display a list of recent posts of a specific type on my front page (the link is to my sandbox site). But, I really need to sort those posts by a custom field. I have it working fine on the actual posts archive page, but the recent posts widget extended is clearly using a custom query that isn’t taking into account my custom sorting field (set in my functions.php using a custom my_pre_get_posts). Does anyone know how to get it to use a custom field for sorting? Thanks in advance.

I also am needing sort by custom field.
@johnny_n I think what you say it’s only for filtering the information to show but no for sorting it or ordering it.
In my opinion, only that (Sort post by a custom field) is needed to be PERFECT!
Please consider to add this feature.
