• Hi,

Here is what happened to me.
I run a website which now days is a real pain. Every time I want to log in wp-admin, I have this message – Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.
I reactivated all plugins and themes without result.
I deleted all plugins and reinstalled my theme without result.
I even reinstalled two times wordpress, without wp-content folder, and there is no other result except now when I refresh the page and I see the toolbar I am not kicked out after clicking on add new post/media etc in order to access the dashboard.
Speaking about the dashboard, I have to say that it is missing. I have the menu with all functions – pages, plugins, settings etc, but not the Dashboard as a link and all wp activity, news …
I didn’t have the 2017 theme either, after first 4.7.1 upgrading.
This problem occurs only when an administrator logs in. The other users have no problem.
I also read all threads about the subject but nothing helped until now.
Can someone kindly help me, please?
    Thank you ??

  • Hello, Prolet, & welcome. Could you provide us w/a site url, please?

Hi Jackie McBride and thank you for getting back to me ??
    Here is the link
Currently 2017 is active no plugins enabled.
I can’t install wp 4.7.2 from the dashboard.
Uploaded the files via FTP and no result either.
I am not a wp expert, but not really new either. But never had this problem until now.
I have some little suspicions though.
The website migrate to a new server. Since then it seems I have no full control over it. But after deleting s2Members plugin the things went crazy.
Do you think there is a some connection?
    Thanks again ??

    Small update.
I am with wp 4.7.2 but still no dashboard ??

Prolet, when you installed WP, which protocol did you choose–http or https?

Also, are you on shared hosting, or a virtual or dedicated server?

Sorry for the questions, but they’re important.

    Thread Starter Prolet

    (@prolet)

    Jackie mcBride,

It is VPS. Errr….I just uploaded wordpress’s files with FZ. I don’t understand the question about the protocol, I am afraid ??
I didn’t choose any. Just opened the FTP and moved the files in.
But the website settings are on https:// as it is the wp-config.php and the database too, if this is of any help for you.

    (@prolet)

    I see!
I just opened FZ, It turns out I uploaded with SFTP-SSH FTP…
Now I will overwrite the files again with FTP only, Is that right? ??

Unless you have an SSL certificate, Prolet, that’s correct–the protocol should be http. Please overwrite the files, & then let’s see if that resolves the problem. Somehow I think it might not, i.e., I suspect a permissions issue at work here as well, but let’s eliminate 1 problem at a time.

    Thread Starter Prolet

    (@prolet)

Dear Jackie, you were right. Nothing changed. But you are also right it could be a permission issue.
By mistake I logged in as a use and here we go – the dashboard was there, beautiful and ready to help ??
Therefore the admins are the problem!

Rather what I suspected, Prolet, but there were actually 2 problems needing to be fixed, so your work was not futile.

Can you tell us what your user & group permissions are in the root folder of your wordPress install?

    Thread Starter Prolet

    (@prolet)

    You are so kind!
But I have no idea what you are asking me…I know enough jut to declare I am an admin. Will you , please help me to understand?

    Thread Starter Prolet

    (@prolet)

Oh I see! It is 0750 ,,, If I am looking in the correct direction.

I’m sorry for being unclear, Prolet. I’m looking for owner & group permissions. The way I got there in FZ was to highlight the folder where WordPress is installed. Then I looked over to the right where it says owner/group:. There should be 2 names following that–in my case it was brighte1 brighte1, but yours will differ, obviously. This is what I need.

    May I ask if there’s a reason you’re using a VPS?

    Thread Starter Prolet

    (@prolet)

Jackie, you are clear, I don’t understand ??
The public_html is the folder where wp is installed. Permission 0750, Owner/Group 50199.

I’d like to offer F2F online auditions to casting directors and actors. To do that the server has to be dedicated, but I went for VPS in order to see how the system works and when I feel secure and confident…and earn enough money will move to a dedicated server.

But it seems I can’t deal well with a simple website what about a media one…
I have no idea what and why happened ??

    Thank you for asking!

Prolet, I do not mean to be insulting. I don’t. I asked you what I did because some of the most devastating website problems I’ve seen have come when folks who do not have sufficient technical expertise (think staring at a $ sign prompt followed by a blinking cursor for hours at a time lol), try to use a VPS. The consequences typically range from a site that’s broken to one that has become compromised. It’s really sad being the person called in to pick up the pieces, not to mention costly for the site owner. I try to prevent that whenever possible, & I feel I’m in a position to possibly do so now.

I’m going to try to explain this. I’ll try twice. If this is something you don’t understand after my having done so, then please get some shared hosting & study up on Linux administration or hire someone to help you manage a dedicated or virtual server. Please.

In Unix-style operating systems, of which Linux is 1, there is the concept of “file ownership”. Windows has this concept, too, i.e., you can’t access another person’s documents folder without being an administrator, for example, but OS’s like Linux take this concept much further. So, for example, generally speaking, when hosting a WordPress site, the files must be owned by a user, and also usually by the webserver group. Thus, the user is generally a member of that group, or the webserver user & group own the site files. The name of this group varies from installation to installation. Often it’s called www-data, but, here again, that varies. This is something not really even dealt with in Windows. Whoever the user is that owns the file needs to be a member of the webserver group. If the file ownership is incorrect, all sorts of problems occur. This is bound very tightly to the whole permissions issue, i.e., those numbers represent the permissions for user, (file owner) group, (group that owns the file), & everyone else.

If that’s unclear, I’ll try again. Please ask any questions you may have. & again, please understand I’m not trying to be patronizing or insulting.

    Dear Jackie,
I am thrilled you took time to explain so important issue with me! Thank you! I hope other users will read your posts too and will apply your knowledge!
I personally am not insulted, the opposite! I am grateful to you!
Going back to my problem, I’d like to report that i solved it.
Unfortunately I didn’t use any special knowledge or tips/tricks. I simply started from the beginning. The old website doesn’t exist anymore. I have a completely new installation and I love having a dashboard and not be kicked out every now and then.
It is ok for starting again. For half an hour I did more work on the website than yesterday for 8 hours. And it’s a pleasure to have all features and they to work for me.
In a personal note, I’d like to be in touch with you. Not to exploit your knowledge, but to enjoy your obviously lovely personality!
Thank you so much for being here for me!
