• ** Update 12/15/2020 **
Gutenberg finally seems to be close to primetime. Most of the functionality of the Classic Editor has finally made it into Gutenberg. I was informed about the addition of adding inline images, which was shocking that it was omitted at first. For my editing needs, I no longer need the Classic Editor plugin (shout out to that team for keeping it available). Gutenberg has a “Classic Editor” block, which is helpful if something doesn’t exist. Gutenberg feels less restrictive now that features have been added to match what was previously available.

I still think there are many power-users that have missing functionality. I hope it continues to be developed, functionality added, and improved.

    ** Original Review **
I really tried to give Gutenberg a shot. However, there are still too many limitations, too many features not carried over from the Classic Editor. Every time I go to click a familiar option, it of course has moved. This results in a search to see how to mimic functionality. Some features simply don’t exist. For instance, I want to create a numbered list for documentation. This can have an image inserted after each item. It used to be easy, shift-enter to line feed, then insert image button. It is not possible to do this in a block. I would have to create a new block, which breaks the numbered list. I had to go back to the Classic Editor to get anything done.

Hey @fahrenhe1t, how are you feeling about Gutenberg these days? Any feedback I can communicate back to the editor team?

BTW, in case you haven’t seen — if you click the down arrow icon when you have your list selected, you can select “inline image,” which should do what you want.

Hi @melchoyce , thank you for following up! Actually, I have to admit that the team has been putting in work on Gutenberg and it really shows. Thanks for the tip on placing inline images; that seems to work now. It has taken awhile to get used to, but it seems to finally have most of the functionality of the Classic Editor…so much so that I was able to remove the Classic Editor plugin from my site. Gutenberg also has the Classic Editor block, which was a nice edition (but is getting used less and less).

One bit of feedback I have has to do with the toolbar during editing. I have a 2K monitor and when I edit a post in full screen, there is a ton of blank, unused space in the toolbar (https://he1t.net/images/gutenberg_space.png). It would be nice if all the toolbar options hidden in the dropdowns and vertical ellipsis expanded out if the users’ resolution is wide enough. It would also be helpful to see all the available options in the toolbar without having to try and find options (since there are two dropdowns next to each other, the caret and the ellipsis).

I think Gutenberg could have stayed in beta a bit longer while functionality was being added to it to match the Classic Editor. Forcing users onto Gutenberg without having 1-to-1 functionality was very frustrating. I can only imagine the panic and anger folks had when they could not accomplish simple tasks they were able to do with the Classic Editor. I hope we’ve all learned something from this exercise. I imagine I’ll have to change this review. Thanks again!

    Hey, that’s good to hear!

It would be nice if all the toolbar options hidden in the dropdowns and vertical ellipsis expanded out if the users’ resolution is wide enough.

This is a great idea — added a new GitHub issue for it: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/27745

It would also be helpful to see all the available options in the toolbar without having to try and find options (since there are two dropdowns next to each other, the caret and the ellipsis).

I agree it’s weird to have two dropdowns next to each other, but they have very different settings in them, so I’m not sure it makes sense to combine them, personally —?maybe there’s another way to tackle the problem?

Thanks again for all your great feedback!
